Naomi Klein Tour Of NZ

6 June 2001

Naomi Klein, author of No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies, will be visiting Zealand in July in a visit sponsored by her publishers Harper Collins.

As part of her visit Naomi has agreed to speak at public meetings in Auckland on July 4 and Wellington on July 5. The Alliance Party has undertaken to organise these meetings and is inviting groups and individuals concerned about the process of corporate dominated globalisation to join with us in making these meetings as successful as possible. We see this as an important opportunity to deepen the public discussion on issue such as the free trade agreement with Hong Kong currently being negotiated and similar agreements proposed with the United States and other countries.

The Auckland meeting will be co-chaired by Alliance Minister Laila Harre and Maori rights activist Syd Jackson. The Wellington meeting will be co-chaired by Alliance Minister Matt Robson and union leader Maxine Gay.

Leaflets and posters are available for distribution from the local meeting organisers. A poster is also attached to this message.

Auckland Meeting 8pm Wed July 4, Mt Eden War memorial Hall, 489 Dominion Rd, Mt Eden

Wellington Meeting 7pm Thurs July 5, Wellington Girls College Hall, Pipitea St, City

REVIEWS OF NO LOGO

"A stylishly argued indictment of post-modern capitalism, in particular the push towards oppressive corporate branding and the associated power structures of worldwide trade" - The Guardian

"The Das Kapital of the growing anti-corporate movement - The London Observer

"A movement bible" - The New York Times

"A manifesto and call to arms that sometimes reads like an Orwellian Nightmare" - Financial Times

"By delivering its news in a voice and style rich with language, references, and humor sure to reach a generation of Most Likely To Be Future Activists, No Logo may itself be one of the anticorporate movements best hopes yet " - The Village Voice

"Don't miss this visionary book, perfectly pitched for our suspect, over-corporate times. Klein - a young funky heiress to Chomsky - has written valiantly about resistance to the multinational mindset, making this welcome book of conscientious objection one of this year's most resonant" - i-D

"A riveting, conscientious piece of journalism and a strident call to arms. Packed with enlightening statistics and extraordinary anecdotal evidence, No Logo is fluent, undogmatically alive to its contradictions and omissions and positively seethes with intelligent anger" - Sam Leith, Observer

"A fascinating ride through the history of marketing...Klein brilliantly humanises No Logo with fascinating personal stories, her voice firm but never preachy, her argument detailed but never obscure." - Alex O'Connell, The Times

"[No Logo] should be read by anyone who thinks that last year's Seattle demonstrations were an aberration. It eloquently sets out the suspicion and resentment that many young folk feel for large companies" - The Economist
