Boastful Maharey Slip-Sliding Away

BOASTFUL MAHAREY SLIP-SLIDING AWAY

"While attention focuses on the Taleban in retreat and on National playing pass the parcel, let us not forget that Steve Maharey is blithely and boastfully wasting our money," says Libertarianz assoc. spokesman for Deregulation of Welfare, Lindsay Mitchell. "If Libertarianz were typical aspiring politicians we would be rubbing our hands together with glee over Steve Maharey's latest debacle," she says, "but frankly, where is the cause for mirth?"

"Labour scrapped the work-for-the-dole scheme for their own job creation scheme, and at what cost? After Maharey roundly slammed the previous scheme as a failure we now discover he has managed to trump it! After boasting that he could create one thousand jobs this year he has created ... fifty-four. At a cost of one milion dollars!

"Maharey should realise that the government is not and never can be a 'jobs machine.' The best way governments can encourage employment is to get the hell out of the way of those who do create jobs - productive businessmen. His government should stop stamping on businesses with excessive regulation and exhaustive demands for tax gathering; he should stop indulging loafers and 'victims' with taxpayers money. He should, in short, leave money with those who have rightfully earned it, that they might invest in their own businesses, their homes and the economy, and so create jobs born of necessity - not of government subsidy.

" It is depressing and disturbing that yet another $1 million has gone down the drain. We mustn't let ourselves be underwhelmed by this figure simply because it is not as gross an extravagance as the almost $ 1 billion to bail out Air New Zealand: it's the same government spending your dosh for the same silly reasons, so don't hold your breath for a different result."

"It's enough," says Mitchell, "to make you vote Libertarianz!"
