Councillor Celia Wade-Brown Selected To Stand For Parliament

The Rongotai branch of the Wellington Greens tonight selected Celia Wade-Brown as its electorate candidate for the 2002 parliamentary elections.

Ms Wade-Brown, will be campaigning to help the Greens nationally reach their target of doubling the Party Vote and doubling the number of Green MPs in Parliament.

Rongotai has traditionally supported Green candidates. In 1999, Green Rongotai candidate Rich Wernham polled 7.7% for the Greens, Sue Kedgley and Celia Wade-Brown have both been popular Green city councillors in the Eastern and Southern wards.

“It’s important to address Green issues nationally and internationally, as well as locally” said Ms Wade-Brown

She says, “ For me, three key issues of the 21st Century are:

one, New Zealand’s opportunity to be a regional leader in low cost appropriate technology, that provides meaningful jobs without spoiling the environment;

two, fair access to resources and technology such as smaller class sizes and assisted community computer access

and three, avoiding further loss of local identity, including culture, intellectual property, plants and animals. ”

Ms Wade-Brown has worked for several large companies as a computer programmer, analyst and standards manager and also as a school teacher. In 1994, 1995 and 2001, she was elected to Wellington City Council.

In 1999, while Celia spent time with her elderly parents in England, she was a New Zealand Green list candidate, hunting down the overseas Green vote online and exploring kiwi haunts in London.

Celia wants to apply the logical analysis she learnt in Philosophy studies and computing to politics. She sees her knowledge in science and technology as adding credibility to a broad Green movement in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Ms Wade-Brown lives in Island Bay with her partner, two sons and dog, in the same house she moved into in 1983. She cycles and walks most days and is a keen gardener.
