CHP Calls For Improved Ethics In Business And Government

Christian Heritage is concerned about recent reports that indicate the possibility of insider trading involving the Prime Minister's office and Air New Zealand shares have been referred to the Securities Commission.

Another recent report indicates possible government failure to ascertain or consider the alleged conviction for insider trading in British Columbia of a recipient of New Zealand Ministry of Economic Development assistance.

These reports are troubling in that they could indicate a lack of understanding or lax attitude toward business and commercial ethics. On top of these reports we are disappointed to hear of the ethical failure evidenced by the, otherwise altruistic, painting donations by the Prime Minister and Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage.

Christian Heritage economic policies are designed to help all New Zealanders prosper. Our party fully supports free enterprise, but we also highlight government responsibility to ensure honest and fair commerce in the market place. This means that government has a duty to restrain commercial activity that undermines individual well-being, family life; and to give appropriate assistance of community services not adequately provided by the market.

In support of this commitment Christian Heritage will strongly advocate for effective penalties to deter insider trading. But not only for the business sector - Christian Heritage wants to insure that elected and appointed government officials are also held to that standard.
