Auckland Federated Farmers Disgusted With Government's Kyoto Stance

Auckland Federated Farmers are disgusted that the Government has taken a political position on Kyoto without allowing the scientific debate to conclude, says the Federation's Auckland President Barry McAlley.

At their 2002 conference and AGM Auckland Federated Farmers members passed a unanimous resolution stating that: "This meeting is appalled that the New Zealand Government has taken a political position on Kyoto without first encouraging scientific debate and before a complete examination of the economic implications for New Zealand have been assessed and urging that the Government delay ratification."

"Auckland Federated Farmers will be writing to Prime Minister and leaders of opposition parties to this effect," said Mr McAlley.

Climate scientist Dr Chris de Freitas, Associate Professor, Auckland University and editor of the international journal "Climate Research" told the meeting that politicians have selectively used scientific data to support their Global Warming concept.

"Auckland Federated Farmers are sending a strong message to the Government that they believe Global Warming is unproven scientifically. The economic effect to New Zealand of actions necessary under the Kyoto protocol are potentially bankrupting and Government should withdraw from the protocol or at least delay ratification."
