Alliance Education Policies On Right Track

20 June 02

The Aotearoa Tertiary Students Association (ATSA) believes that the Alliance has the right ideas to stop the time Bomb tertiary education has become.

The Alliance is proposing:
Universal Allowances for all students
Removal of tuition fees
Scrapping of the student loan scheme
Increased funding for public tertiary institutions, especially to support regional polytechnics Better wages and conditions for tertiary staff

“Not only are they promising what our education system needs,” said Julie Pettett, President of ATSA. “They are realistic in how to achieve these goals.”

“With over $5 Billion in student debt that is growing at a phenomenal rate, tertiary education is the issue parties must take a clear stand on,” stated Pettett. “There is no political agenda that can justify ignoring education. ATSA would like to see other parties adopt these policies.”

“Any political party that does not address the funding crisis facing the tertiary education system is sending this country down a long road of growing financial debt and increased social injustice.”
