Minister Asked To Pull Finger

Libertarianz health deregulation spokesman Richard McGrath added his support to National's Dr Lynda Scott who wants the health minister to take responsibility for the plight of pensioner Ted Matthews who lopped off his rotting finger with a pair of scissors.

"However the problem is not one of ageism, communication or efficiency problems, or rural disadvantage, as the National Party suggests," said Dr McGrath. "It rests with the fact that many New Zealanders, particularly the less well-off, can no longer afford to purchase health insurance or save adequately to cover the cost of private health care. They are crippled by income taxation which takes up to 51% of a person's income, with GST and excise tax accounting for a large part of whatever they spend with the remainder."

"Dr Scott is pointing the finger at Annette King when her own party is just as guilty. Its endorsement of socialised medicine, complete with rationed care and the exodus of trained staff for a better life overseas, speaks volumes."

"Libertarianz is the only party who rejects compulsory health levies, just as it rejected compulsory superannuation levies," added Dr McGrath. "Each New Zealander owns their mind and body and deserves to be left free to chart their course through life, provided they don't harm others."
