“The Government announcement that it will ratify ILO Convention 98 on Collective Bargaining is an historic human rights milestone for New Zealand,” Council of Trade Unions president Ross Wilson said today.
ILO Convention 98 is one of the core conventions of the International Labour Organisation which all 180 member countries are expected to comply with as a condition of membership.
“The decision also signals the Government’s commitment to the promotion of collective bargaining in New Zealand as a guaranteed workers’ right,” Ross Wilson said.
“After the experience of the 1990s when the Employment Contracts Act was found by the ILO to be in breach of these international law requirements it is pleasing to see the Clark Government taking our international obligations seriously.
“The decision is also
a tribute to the astute work of Labour Minister Margaret
Wilson who has moved New Zealand back into the mainstream of
international employment law with the Employment Relations
Act which fully complies with ILO Convention 98”.
