“South Canterbury Health Bosses Mean Spirited”

“South Canterbury Health Bosses Mean Spirited”

“South Canterbury health bosses are mean spirited in their treatment of their senior doctors,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today. Mr Powell was responding to the revelation today that the amount of additional funding received by the District Health Board was more than expected.

“The South Canterbury District Health Board already had one of the best financial positions of all the 21 DHBs in the country and now it reports even better news with more than expected additional funding due, about an extra $120,000.”

“At the same time they require senior doctors to work dangerous, onerous and high risk after-hours emergency rosters, pay them poorly compared with other district health boards, and steadfastly refuse to provide adequate compensation for these onerous conditions. No wonder senior doctors have been forced to take strike action.”

“The difference between what South Canterbury’s health bosses first thought they would receive and what they now expect to receive would bridge the gap between the parties in the broken down negotiations. Management can’t claim they can’t afford it and keep a straight face at the same time.”

“If this attitude by South Canterbury’s health bosses is not mean spirited then Scrooge was the Good Samaritan,” concluded Mr Powell.
