AUCKLAND (PIMA/Pacific Media Watch): The Pacific Islands Media Association of New Zealand (PIMA) will be holding its 2003 conference on October 3 and 4 at Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

Several key events will be happening, including the launches of the Niue Star newspaper and Pacific Journalism Review, and the PIMA Media Awards presentation.

Two media scholarships are also available from AUT's School of Communication Studies - one undergraduate and one postgraduate scholarship.

AUT has New Zealand's largest communication studies programme and journalism course. As well as journalism, the school offers course majors in communication theory, creative industries, public relations, multimedia, radio and television.

The deadline for scholarship applications is September 17 2003. Application forms can be downloaded from the PIMA website: http://www.pima.org.nz

The team from PIMA, helped by Holona Lui at the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, has developed a draft strategic plan for the next five to 10 years, which will be presented at the conference. The committee has also been fine-tuning PIMA's draft constitution and code of ethics - these will also be presented at the conference.

In July this year, several PIMA members attended the Pacific Island News Association (PINA) conference in Apia, Samoa. This was the first time that an organised Pacific island media contingent from New Zealand attended the conference.

PIMA's media statement said that it hoped to form a closer relationship with PINA and PIBA in the future.
