Wintringham Comments On Zaoui Info Report

Labour Dept report into the release on information on Mr Ahmed Zaoui

The State Services Commissioner, Michael Wintringham, today commented on the Department of Labour's report into the management of information relating to Mr Ahmed Zaoui.

Mr Wintringham said "I have read the report prepared by Dr James Buwalda on the Department of Labour's management of information relating to Mr Ahmed Zaoui.

"I consider that Dr Buwalda has done a good job under difficult circumstances. He has not only established the facts of the matter in question but also identified areas of improvement for the department and initiated disciplinary procedures.

"The vast majority of public servants uphold the highest standards of ethical behaviours in their work. Allegations of improper behaviour by a public servant impact on all public servants and any allegations should be investigated thoroughly.

"I have confidence that Dr Buwalda will investigate the apparent breach of the Immigration Service's Code of Conduct with the fairness and thoroughness that are the hallmarks of today's report.

"For citizens to have trust in government, Public Service chief executives must demonstrate leadership on values and standards and model the highest standards of integrity. Dr Buwalda has demonstrated the standards I expect of chief executives through this investigation and the actions he and the department will take to retain citizens' trust. New Zealanders have a right to expect nothing less," he said.
