In 2004 Volunteer Awareness Week is 7 to 13 March

Press Release
March 2nd 2004

“Aotearoa New Zealand would NOT be the great place to live that it is today
if we didn’t have volunteers”

In 2004 Volunteer Awareness Week is 7 to 13 March

From Birth to Death – through Baby Care, Playcentre, Kindergarten, School, Sport, Hobbies, Health and Welfare, Parks and Reserves, Museums and Galleries – Volunteers impact on our lives.
‘When we stop to consider what volunteers do the list is endless’

Across the country Volunteer Awareness Week will be celebrated from Sunday 7 March to Saturday 13 March.

What a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the contribution volunteers make to our communities and lives.

Each of the 9 Volunteer Centres around Aotearoa New Zealand and many organisations will be celebrating in their own unique way. Contact your nearest volunteer centre and/ or volunteer organisations to see what they are doing to celebrate, there is bound to be a good story in it. Many of the organisations use this week to stage their Volunteer Recognition Awards ceremonies and often local celebrities are involved in these.

Volunteers are so active in our communities that we can easily overlook their contribution, we forget they are volunteering their time, because they are always just there.

Volunteer Awareness Week is an opportunity to stop and consider the impact volunteers have on our daily lives. Our communities rely on the effort of volunteers to function, they help out with: kitchen and cleaning duties; maintenance and care of grounds and buildings; service delivery for health, welfare, education, sport, arts, rescue, advocacy and more and sometimes just to give someone a bit of time and compassion.

‘They make our lives run smoothly’

Chair of Volunteering New Zealand Alison Marshall said today.

“Volunteer Awareness Week gives all New Zealanders the opportunity to think about the contribution volunteers make to our society. This is your chance to say thank you!”
