Timor-Leste in Canberra

New Zealand,29 March 2004

The First Ambassador Of Timor-Leste To New Zealand

The relationship between Timor-Leste and New Zealand, took a major step forward today with the accreditation of Timor-Leste’s first Ambassador to New Zealand HE Dr Jorge da C Teme. In a deeply significant moment for both the East Timorese people and the New Zealand supporters, Her Excellency the Honourable Dame Silvia Cartwright, PCNZM, DBE, the Governor General of New Zealand accepted the credentials presented to her by Dr. Teme the Ambassador of Timor-Leste.

The ceremony of credential presentation was held in Government House at 11.50 AM New Zealand time today. Ambassador Teme was accompanied by Mrs. Madalena Alves, Second Secretary of the Embassy, and Timorese representative in New Zealand Dr. Helder da Costa.

“My main priority as non-residential Ambassador to New Zealand is to strengthen the existing relationship between New Zealand and Timor-Leste. New Zealand has played an important role not only in the restoration of peace and security in Timor-Leste but has also committed itself to providing financial assistance to the reconstruction and rebuilding of our country. In addition, New Zealand has a large number of Timorese postgraduate students pursuing their studies in the land of the Kiwi. Therefore, it is my priority to lobby the New Zealand Government to continue its assistance for Timor-Leste in the area of Human Resource Development. I believe that the New Zealand Government and its people will take pride in our success”.

“As the non-residential Ambassador for Timor-Leste in New Zealand, I will face many challenges. However, these are the challenges I look forward to. Despite the obstacles that I will face, I am honoured and excited about the new posting. As a former student and independence campaigner in New Zealand I have had the opportunity of meeting the current leaders of the New Zealand Government. Thus, I expect that this new transition should be somewhat easier.”

During his visit to New Zealand, Ambassador Teme, has had the opportunity to meet with the New Zealand Solidarity Groups, the Timorese Community and East Timorese Students in Wellington and Palmerston North. He will be returning to Canberra on 3rd April 2004.
