Fisheries Officers Call Off Action In Face Of Threat

“NUPE has informed the Ministry of Fisheries that Fishery Officers have voted to call off their work to rule from midnight Monday in the face of a threat to suspend all NUPE members,” said Martin Cooney, organiser with the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE) today.

“The Ministry of Fisheries has clarified with Fisheries Officers that they will make a recommendation to the Minister round 12 July on the matter of equipping them with OC spray and ASP batons and NUPE has given an assurance that there will now be no action till after that date,” said Martin Cooney.

“Fishery Officers have been taking legal industrial action by working to rule today over the Fishery Officers’ Collective Employment Agreement negotiations which have been underway since early in 2003,” said Martin Cooney. “Strike action took place today over claims for a remuneration increase and the provision of defensive capability.”

“Fishery Officers feel they were faced with a heavy handed approach from the Ministry but decided to stick to the plan of action put forward by delegates rather than respond to the tactics of their employer,” said Martin Cooney.
