Hikoi TuaRua Whatever… The Weather

Rain, hail or shine members of arc will be converging in Auckland this weekend to join other Pakeha and tauiwi and tangata whenua for the second hikoi voicing concern over the select committee process and opposing the seabed and foreshore legislation. arc is a national network of young people who are committed to education and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

“We’re members of what was recently defined as the “Whatever” generation. We claim that term and say whatever the government does to silence people on this issue we will continue to demonstrate our opposition to the bill”, said Jen Margaret, a Pakeha spokesperson for arc. . “Thousands of people made submissions to the select committee on the bill, yet only 350 were heard. Several days of hearings were cancelled with no reason being provided to submitters. Many people have been silenced this unfair process”.

“The bill as it stands is clearly a violation of domestic and international human rights standards and conventions”, said Jen Margaret. “The submissions have highlighted the huge problems with the bill and the disastrous impact it could have on the future of this country.”

arc encourages young people to voice their opposition by joining the hikoi. “As young people we are the ones who will have to deal with the negative impacts of this legislation. We are giving our leaders the clear message that they must heed the widespread opposition to this bill.”
