Commission Workshops In Southland & Otago Next Week

Wellington - 30 November 2000: The Royal Commission on Genetic Modification will be conducting workshops in Southland and Otago next week as part of its Maori consultation programme.

Workshops will be held, between 2:00pm and 5:00pm, at Nga Hau E Wha Marae, 193 Conon Street, Invercargill, on Monday, 4 December, and Internal Affairs Building, on the corner of George Street and the Octagon, Dunedin, on Tuesday, 5 December.

All are welcome to attend.

These workshops will focus on providing information to Maori on the role of the Commission and the regional hui submission process.

The date of the regional hui has been altered and it will now be held at Otakau Marae, near Dunedin, on Tuesday, 6 March 2001, between 9:15am and 5:00pm.

"This programme is one of several consultation methods we have adopted to ensure we hear the views of the public and meet our terms of reference that require us to 'consult and engage with Maori in a manner that specifically provides for their needs'," says Commission chairman Sir Thomas Eichelbaum.

For details about the workshops or regional hui, please phone: 0800 001 480 or visit the Commission website: www.gmcommission.govt.nz.
