Web Company Takes The Pulse Of Personal Websites

New Web Company Takes The Pulse Of Personal Websites

There's a new company taking the pulse of personal websites as they surge in popularity.

A powerful search tool and a comprehensive review process have been developed by new Internet company Pdom to celebrate the personal website, and educate people in the potential uses of this emerging medium.

Launching Pdom online today, CEO and founder Robert Wiles said people are discovering how easy and exciting it is to express themselves on the Net.

"Personal Users are reclaiming the web from commerce, and turning it to their own, sometimes unpredictable purposes."

Pdom reviewers have trawled through personal websites, pulling up notable sites for Pdom's team of reviewers who then rank them according to personality, functionality, creativity and content.

Personal sites take many forms. Families take to the web to share their slice of the universe www.hostetler.net, entire clans link up in genealogy sites www.macdonald.com, and individuals express their identity, sometimes-heartfelt www.gleeb.com/princess/, sometimes whimsically www.dancingpaul.com, but always personally www.woody.webster.org.

While most celebrity websites are extensions of a carefully managed public profile eg catherinezetajones.com, others offer greater personal insight, www.jeffbridges.com and a few are extensions of the person which are almost too personal www.melaniegriffith.com.

"This new form of self-expression is new territory for all of us," Wiles says. "However, soon it will become familiar. We want to connect people with the possibilities of the personal website and encourage them to stretch their imagination."

Personal websites fall into three general categories; celebrities, families and individual or 'real people' websites and Pdom has profiled the Top 100 websites in each of the three categories.

Personal sites vary hugely in look and content", says Wiles, "The gap is as wide as that between Michelangelo and a cave painter. There are some very good and some embarrassingly bad sites out there and surprisingly some of the worst sites are from celebrities who should know better."

About Pdom: Pdom, launched 5 June 2001,is the world's first Internet company focused on everything to do with personal domain names and personal websites.
