Two Southlanders have saved Invercargill, Fiordland , Southland and New Zealand Internet Domains from Going Overseas.

The .INFO registry opened on October 1, with more than 350,000 .INFO domain names registered. As described on the ".info" Internet site:

Te Anau Lakeview Kiwi Holiday Park and New Zealand Country had taken crucial precautionary measures and "pre-registered" their interest in acquiring strategic New Zealand Internet domain names. Pre-registration placed them in a "lottery pool", where indications of interest were chosen randomly on October 1.

Clint Tauri, Te Anau Lakeview Kiwi Holiday Park, and Marc Cohen, NZ Country, have collaborated on a number of Internet projects over the last five years and both recognized early on in the dotcom era the importance of Internet domains names. For the new .info domains, they figured that by banding together to pre-register their respective interest in strategic generic New Zealand Internet .info domains, they would double their chance of acquiring them.

While many key .info domains did "go overseas" (newzealand.info is held by a Hazim Jameel in Sheffield, England), both were handsomely rewarded and now hold valuable promotional Internet domains such as southland.info, fiordland.info, stewartisland.info, teanau.info, milfordsound.info, doubtfulsound.info, catlins.info, invercargill.info, bestofnewzealand.info, e-newzealand.info.

Other savvy Southland, Fiordland, Queenstown and Otago business owners also protected their interests and nabbed strategic generic .info generic Internet domains.
