Let's Go Fly a Kite

School's out this weekend for the next two weeks. MetService meteorologists are forecasting plenty of windy weather over the school holidays, good for kite-flying.

"A windy pattern like this is normal for late September ", said MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt. "This weekend should set the pattern with northwest winds possibly reaching severe gale force around the wind-prone parts of Wellington, Marlborough, and Wairarapa. A cold southerly is forecast to bring some snow to the hills and mountains of Otago and Canterbury on Sunday, and then the westerly winds should take over."

McDavitt added that the extreme weather patterns that have been affecting the tropics in the northern hemisphere lately are not directly affecting New Zealand's weather. "We are surrounded by sea surface temperatures that are about to slightly below normal. This has been cooling things down and helps to explain our delayed start to the warmth of spring."
