Red Cross launches Indian earthquake appeal

The Red Cross movement today launched a preliminary appeal for NZ$3 million to help victims of the powerful earthquake that struck western India earlier today. In an immediate response Red Cross in Geneva has contributed approximately NZ$270,000 to the Indian Red Cross’ relief operation.

“It is the worst quake to hit India since 1956 and has left thousands of people in urgent need of emergency assistance”, “said NZRC International Programmes Co-ordinator, Greg Clewley

The appeal aims initially to assist 50,000 victims of the earthquake. The first priority is to provide funds to the Indian Red Cross to buy urgently needed relief items such as clothes, blankets, basic medical supplies, shelter and provision of clean water and sanitation facilities. The earthquake peaked at 7.9 on the Richter scale about 50 kms north east of Bhuj city, one of the most inaccessible parts of western India. The city of Ahmadabad was badly hit and tremors were felt across several states.

“Our greatest concern is that the crisis is still unfolding. It’s a very isolated area and we don’t yet have the complete picture. Many people may still be trapped,” said Mr Clewley.

“We hope New Zealanders will once again show their support as they have done many times in the past.”

New Zealanders can call 0900-33 200 (AFTER 9 PM TONIGHT) to make an automatic $20 donation, or post a donation to:
Freepost Red Cross, PO Box 12-140, Wellington.
