US advises Americans to stay away from Fiji

US suggests Americans should stay away from Fiji

The US government has advised its citizens to stay away from Fiji.

Yesterday's Fiji Sun reported that the US advised US travel agents to advise their clients and tourists against coming to Fiji due to the current position of instability. The US government regularly issued travel advisories to its citizens.

Earlier Australia and NZ had also advised their citizens to pay particular attention to their personal security if they are in Fiji.

The military and the police have gone on a massive public relations exercise to show that they are in control of the security situation in the country. This has included visitations and meetings in villages.

Meanwhile media reports that the police would not tolerate "well-cooked stories or rumours" that will incite fear within the nation. The reference was, according to today's Fiji Sun, reports that villagers from Tailevu bought 800 knives from a supermarket in Suva. The supermarket denied that it ever stocked 800 knives.
