FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GLOBAL JUSTICE ACTIVISTS PREPARE TO DENOUNCE FAT CAT-POLITICIAN HUGFEST "DAVOS ON THE HUDSON"

Direct-Action Protests To Oppose World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting In New York, Jan. 31-Feb. 4.

NEW YORK - Mass direct-action protests against corporate globalization will take place in New York City from Thursday, January 31 to Monday, February 4, during the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. In the first such protests since the tragedies of September 11, global justice activists from across the US and many other countries will converge to raise their voices against the corporate and government elite gathering at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

Another World Is Possible, a broad-based coalition that includes organized labor, students, environmentalists, human rights campaigners, and other anti-corporate-globalization activists, is calling for five days of mass rallies and creative, passionate actions against the WEF. Direct-action protests as diverse as New York City itself will be the centerpiece of two weeks of teach-ins, conferences, and performances aimed at educating Americans about the destructive effects of corporate globalization and how to organize against it.

With their ideas, bodies, and creative energy, activists will show that the movement for global justice is alive, well and growing - ready to stand in the way of the WEF's five-day corporate cocktail party. They will be protesting Mayor Bloomberg's and Gov. Pataki's decision to shell out millions for this event even as they insist on drastic cutbacks in public services for a city and state still reeling from tragedy. And they will be voicing their own demands for a positive public agenda that puts human need ahead of corporate greed:

STOP DESTROYING THE EARTH - Corporate-driven growth is driving species to extinction and depleting our resources. We say to corporations, hands off our environment.

STOP FUELING TERRORISM, STOP THE WAR MACHINE - Terror networks like al-Qaeda were encouraged and funded by the US government and its allies. Stop all arms production and supplies, stop all military aid and action. Stop the cycle of terror.

NO APARTHEID FOR IMMIGRANTS, HANDS OFF OUR CIVIL RIGHTS - An attack on immigrants' civil rights is an attack on everyone's civil rights. No military tribunals, no imprisonment without conviction in open trial, no racial profiling - and freedom for detainees!
