PERMITS OBTAINED FOR ANTI-WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM EVENTS; SAT. MARCH ROUTE CONFIRMED

Mass Protests Attract Thousands to Vigil (Fri., Feb. 1, 6pm, Washington Square) and Rally and March (Sat., Feb. 2, 12 noon, 59th St. and Fifth Ave.)

Another World Is Possible, with the help of attorneys from the National Lawyers Guild, has obtained march, sound, and rally permits from the New York City Parks Department and Police Department for the mass protests it will hold this weekend against the World Economic Forum. Another World Is Possible now has a permit for the use of Washington Square Park for the evening of Friday, Feb. 1 from the Parks Department. It also has a permit from the NYPD for Saturday, Feb. 2 to assemble at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue and march to Park Avenue between 48th and 49th Streets, followed by a stationary rally at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, where the WEF is meeting.

The NYPD march permit covers an agreed-upon march route that will include sites that house corporate criminals. All of these events are lawful and permitted. Scheduled events are as follows:

Friday, Feb. 1 at 6pm in Washington Square Park, Another World Is Possible and the Pagan Cluster will co-sponsor a vigil/pageant/ritual. This event will be welcoming to people of all (or no) religious persuasions, and will focus on healing, empowerment, and forging our vision of a better world.

Saturday, Feb. 2 at 12 noon, Another World Is Possible invites all people with kind hearts and courage to rally at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue (opposite the Plaza Hotel). We will begin our march at 1pm along the following route:

* From 59th Street and Fifth Avenue to Lexington Avenue;

* Lexington to East 52nd Street, then east on 52th and south on Second Avenue;

* Second Avenue to East 47th Street, then west on 47th

* East 47th Street to Park Avenue, then north on Park, ending on Park Avenue between East 48th and 49th Streets, in the middle of the block, diagonally across from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The rally will continue there until sundown.

Another World Is Possible has a sound permit for the Saturday rally at 59th and Fifth, several corporate locations along our march route, and then for our rally at the Waldorf. The National Lawyers Guild, New York City Chapter Mass Defense Committee will have attorneys present at both the Friday evening and Saturday events to ensure that activists' legal rights are protected. For questions regarding legal issues concerning these events, please call Leslie Ann Brody, National Lawyers' Guild, New York City Chapter, (917) 687-7656.

The organizers of Friday's vigil and Saturday's march and rally are encouraging activists to participate within the parameters of the permits issued. That way, all participants can feel as safe as possible when they turn out to expose the harm done by the WEF, its members and the policies it promotes, and to illuminate a new vision of a better world.

Another World Is Possible is a broad-based coalition that includes organized labor, students, environmentalists, human rights campaigners, and other anti-corporate-globalization activists. The Friday vigil and the Saturday march and rally will be the centerpiece of a week of teach-ins, conferences, and performances aimed at educating Americans about the destructive effects of corporate globalization and how to organize against it.
