BNFL Shipment Contains MOX Fuel, Not Waste

23 July 2002

Note To Editors/News Editors

BNFL wishes to advise that references to the current shipment of MOX fuel in the Tasman Sea as “waste shipments” are incorrect.

The shipment contains MOX fuel which is not waste.

Please ensure that future references to the material make it clear that this is fuel and not waste.

Claims by opponents of the shipment to the contrary have no validity. The Environment Agency in the United Kingdom (the body responsible by law for determining the status of nuclear materials coming into the UK) has made a formal declaration that this material is fuel and not waste.

Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.
