Israel/Occupied Territories: Amnesty International condemns attack on university

* News Release Issued by the International Secretariat of Amnesty International *

31 July 2002 MDE 15/125/2002

Amnesty International condemned today's bomb attack, claimed by Hamas, at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, in which at least seven people were killed and some 85 people injured. According to Hamas, today's attack was carried out in retaliation for the Israeli army air strike on Gaza last week, which killed 15 people, including nine children and a leader of Hamas's military wing.

"Attacks on civilians are never justified," Amnesty International said. "We reiterate our call on the leadership of all Palestinian armed groups to end attacks on civilians immediately."

Background Amnesty International has recently published a report on attacks against civilians. The report Without distinction -- attacks on civilians by Palestinian armed groups documents 128 attacks in which more than 350 civilians, most of them Israeli, were killed since the beginning of the Al-Aqsa intifada in September 2000.
