Nablus: Health Workers Harassed, Arrested Delivering Letter from Schoolchildren

Nablus, West Bank: At 2pm today, a group of Palestinian public health workers were detained and one person arrested while attempting to deliver letters from a group of Nablus schoolchildren to Israeli soldiers stationed nearby. Volunteers from the Palestinian Health Committees, the Medical Relief Committees, and the International Solidarity Movement delivered a letter from Nablus children to Israeli soldiers stationed at Sabatash checkpoint, located at a thoroughfare for students and workers traveling between Nablus and nearby villages.

When arriving at the checkpoint, Israeli soldiers responded with threats of violence and arrested Manal Al Tamimi, 24, emergency medical relief coordinator. No reason was given for her arrest. The soldiers also confiscated the identification cards of everyone in the group, in effect detaining the 14 public health workers for several hours.

Manal Al Tamimi is a child psychologist, and acts as a volunteer medical relief coordinator in Nablus. Sabatash checkpoint is notorious as the sight of ongoing human rights violations. Presently the Israeli military is under investigation several Israeli and international human-rights organizations.
