Hay Salaam is invaded

Gaza 14 Oct 03 Mohammed and Laura

Hay Salaam is invaded in a further escalation of attacks in Rafah ..... The army is still occupying the area, which is now under strict curfew. It has been extremely difficult to find out what has been happening inside, due to the area being totally secured. However, some reports have come out by contacting locals by mobile phone. Residents said that water and electricity networks have been bulldozed and seven houses have been completely demolished and two have been partially demolished. Four olive groves have been razed. Hay Salaam is an agricultural and residential area. Sources also said that the IOF began to raid Palestinian homes, searching them and damaging furniture, arresting people and terrifying families.

The homes of Dr. Samir Nasrallah (which Rachel Corrie died protecting in March) and Abu Ahmed (featured in the film \"Shebab Daiya\") are in the middle of the area being occupied.

Gaza 14 Oct 03 Laura Gordon

Then the streets started screaming and we were running almost without thinking, down the edges of the street around the people who had lost their fear, around donkey carts loaded full, ran until we fround a corner to turn into and then we ran past families and children, through narrow streets far enough from the main street not to know the worst, far enough that we were the ones spreading the news that the army had come back.

Old men’s eyes opened wide and mothers pulled their children inside, casting weary gazes in the direction from where we had come.
