PORT MORESBY (Post-Courier/Pacific Media Watch). Information is power and Papua New Guinea needs to find the right medium to communicate to the people so they can make informed decisions, reports the Post-Courier.
State Enterprises and Information/Communication Minister Arthur Somare said this after returning from an Asia forum on developing policies for information communication technology (ICT) and e-strategies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, last week.
Somare will be seeking cabinet¹s endorsement to adopt information communication technology as a tool for national development and poverty reduction.
He said the purpose of ICT was to improve communication mediums, which allow people to make informed decisions on development issues. ³Our desire is to reduce poverty level with ICT as an enabling tool in line with our prioritised national development goals for good governance, export driven economy, human development, people empowerment and poverty reduction,² Somare said.
He said technology changes vary now and again and it was necessary to adopt ICT and put it into use.
³The 1994 policy on information and communication seemed at the time to be comprehensive. But it did not take into account the changes of technology ‹ the new changes to the methods of communication,² he said.
