USP To Host Regional Media Conference

SUVA (USP Journalism/Pacific Media Watch): The University of the South Pacific's Journalism Programme is hosting the annual Journalism Education Association (JEA) conference in Fiji.

The conference has been confirmed for Suva on December 5-9.

JEA is the main regional journalism education organisation in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

A statement issued by the conference convenor Steve Sharp, a journalism lecturer at USP, said the theme would be "Media literacy in the Pacific and Asia".

The objectives are to:

* overcome isolation of Pacific countries and Pacific media from journalism school expertise in the region;

* allow Asia-Pacific journalism educators to increase their awareness and media literacy of the region for themselves and their own students;

* give delegates an opportunity to form networks for exchange of teaching expertise and media content;

* increase media literacy across the Pacific and Asia in ways that will expand information markets within and between different parts of the region;

* promote regional literacy through media education and media industry development.

Venue: JJs on the Park, Suva

Dates: 5-9 December 2004

Organising committee - Steve Sharp (journalism lecturer/convenor) Shailendra Singh (journalism lecturer) Joe Yaya (journalism tutor) Tamani Nair (industry representative - Radio Fiji) Naziah Ali (USP Journalism Students Association) Hamidan Bibi (Public Relations Office, USP)
