Norwegians Challenge Bush In Washington Post Ad

Norwegians Challenge Bush In Washington Post Ad
http://www.tellhim.no

When the Norwegian government doesn't tell George W. Bush the Norwegian opinion on the Iraqi war, we have to tell him ourselves.

That is why two ads are printed in the October 12 edition of the Washington Post. You can find the ad here: http://www.tellhim.no/dokumenter/annonse.pdf

The text of the ad follows:

**********

A letter from the concerned citizens and organizations of Norway
The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States
Washington, DC

Mr. President

As friends of the United States, we respect your country's strength, creativity and generosity. At this point in history however, we are compelled to speak out. Four out of five Norwegians oppose the U.S.-led war on Iraq and our government has failed to clearly express the majority opinion of its people.

Mr. President - we urge you to change your foreign policy. To pursue a flawed and failed policy is a sign of weakness. We want the United States to be strong and creative enough to apologize to the Iraqi people for an unjust war, and to the Allies for having misled them. We want the USA to be generous enough to compensate the innocent victims of violence, looting and trauma inflicted by torture. We firmly believe that the quest for peace in Iraq is best led by the United Nations and a democratically-elected Iraqi government.

Mr. President - your country can once again be a leading example of democracy and freedom, inspiring a world where terrorism can no longer breed. Your present policy only fosters resistance, more than ever, everywhere.

Mr. President - the choice is yours.

Sincerely

Concerned citizens and organizations of Norway

TellHim is a politically unaffiliated campaign, sponsored by private citizens and organizations in Norway. The message of the campaign is that the Norwegian Government's policy on Iraq does not reflect popular opinion in Norway. This advertisement has been paid for by private citizens and a wide range of cultural, business and humanitarian organizations and trade unions in Norway.

**********

Today we clearly speak out our opinion and concern about the war in Iraq.

More than 80% of all Norwegians opposed the US-led war in Iraq. A majority also favours the withdrawal of Norwegian forces from Iraq.

Still, Norway is perceived as uncritical supporter of the US "war on terror". Norway is on the "willing list" of countries that support this policy, and President George W. Bush also mentioned Norway specifically in his State of the Union address this year.

Tellhim.no has therefore collected money for two ads in the Washington Post, in which we explain the general Norwegian opinion about the war in Iraq, and George W. Bush's foreign policy.

We do not think the US "war on terror" decreases worldwide terror - on the contrary. We oppose the war on Iraq, and we are also against the harassment and torture that we have seen.
