Fiji Student Tops USP Journalism Awards

SUVA (Wansolwara Online/Pacific Media Watch): Final-year Fiji student Naziah Ali has collected four prizes at the annual University of the South Pacific student journalism awards.

Ali took the Tanoa Award for the journalism student of the year and the All Media Achievement award for outstanding contribution across all three mediums print, online and broadcast.

She won two other awards jointly Best TV Journalism award with Nauruan student Joanna Olsson and the Best Feature Story prize with Solomon Islander Joy Angi.

The USP journalism awards were held in conjunction with the Journalism Education Association¹s (JEA) 2004 conference and Ossie Awards in Suva last week.

Among the guests were JEA members from Australia, New Zealand and the region, local journalists, former and current USP journalism students, industry representatives, media editors and USP academic staff.

The Fiji Times Most Promising First Year Student award went to Shazia Usman of Fiji.

According to her citation, Usman showed the hallmarks of a good journalist by diligently meeting deadlines and contributing quality news stories to the programme¹s training newspaper, Wansolwara, and news website, Wansolwara Online.

The Radio Australia Prize and Storyboard Award for Outstanding Regional Journalism that normally goes to a graduating individual from the region had no qualifiers this year.

The Storyboard Award, a carving from Papua New Guinea, was donated by former USP journalism coordinator David Robie and his wife Del. The first winner was Maire Bopp of Tahiti in the inaugural USP journalism awards in 1999.

The Review/fijilive.com USP Journalism gold medal award will be presented during the USP-wide gold medal awards graduation ceremony in April. The graduating journalism gold medalist will receive $500, courtesy of the Review Group.
