http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/AK0011/S00038.htm Rapid Transit on Queen Street – Workshop #3 Tuesday, 14 November 2000, 5:37 pm Press Release: Auckland City Council 14 November 2000 DIARY NOTE Rapid Transit on Queen Street – Workshop #3 Queen Street is a crucial section of a proposed new Central Line in Auckland’s planned regional rapid transit system. It will be the link that will tie the system together as a multi-modal, integrated network rather than groups of discrete, territorially based services. The concept is for a rapid transit line for either light rail or buses – or both. It would run from the proposed new transport interchange in the downtown Auckland, past the universities and hospital, and through to Boston Road on the Western Line. It might then loop back to the Queen Street Station via Newmarket and Parnell. Planning for the Queen Street section is focused on accommodating rapid transit alongside the Street’s many other roles, and ending up with an environment that is vibrant yet functional and safe. The third workshop of issues and solutions for putting rapid transit on Queen Street will be held next Monday, November 20. Invited participants – representatives of central Auckland business organisations and property owners, transport operators, local & regional councils etc – will work together and in groups on issues that remain unresolved following the two earlier workshops. Issues before them will include options for the alignment of the light rail tracks, positioning of stations on Queen Street, service vehicle access, and safety and security. Urban design issues are included, in particular how to give the new Queen Street an identity that distinctly Auckland and New Zealand. The workshop will be open to observers. What: Queen Street Workshop #3 Where: Leftfield Sports Café, Princes Wharf When: Monday 20 November 9.30am – 3.30 pm The best time to be there: 9.30am – 11 am for the briefing on work completed to date and presentation of concepts developed so far.
