Russell Peninsula Kiwi Recovery Award
Northland Regional Council
Project manager receives award from NRC
Northland Regional Council presented Laurence Gordon with an Environmental Award last week.
The award acknowledges the great contribution played by Gordon in spearheading the Kiwi Project on the Russell Peninsula. Gordon teamed up with local community trust, Enterprise Russell, and with funds contributed by various benefactors and funding bodies, erected a fence at the bottom of the Russell Peninsula and embarked on a pest control programme.
The 2,500 ha peninsula is 75% regenerating native forest, which gives Kiwi plenty of opportunities to recover.
“It’s been extraordinary,” said Gordon as he was presented the award, which included pest control products from the NRC with which to continue the campaign. “A great bonus to see the Brown Teal also benefit. There have been so many extra chicks carry through to fledging this Spring.”
As a spin off of their initiative, members of the community have formed a Landcare group and are working on other conservation projects in the community.
