Let Them Eat Cake

12 July 2002

Preparations continue for the auction of Mayor John Banks' home, on Bastille Day, Sunday 14th July. Members of Brassouls, Gail Tinehau, Elephant Gerald and Empty Rooms, along with street theatre, are lined up to provide musical entertainment and political satire.

Marie Antoinette and Louis 14th will join forces with the bag man and bag lady to rebel against John Banks and deputy Mayor David Hay eating all the cake. The Mayor who would be king is lambasted for selling the Council's housing stock and causing such misery for present and potential tenants.

With business consultants assuring us that now is the right time to sell, we are confident that our fundraising efforts will be rewarded. The auctioneer is looking forward to brisk bidding.

Tenants from Council pensioner villages and residential units will be joined by supporters from all parts of Auckland in solidarity with our opposition to the proposed sale of nearly 1,700 Council homes. Local politicians and MPs have also been invited. Fundraising activities start at 2pm outside Remuera Library, corner of St. Vincent Street and Remuera Road. These include a garage sale and hot food, with the auction starting at 3pm. Wet weather plans are in hand.
