Sewerage Flows into Heathcote River
A sewer pipe that became blocked around 6pm on Friday causing sewage to overflow into a stormwater gutter and into the Heathcote River may result in a slightly higher than usual "bug" count in the Estuary today.
City Water and Waste Manager Mike Stockwell says the blockage was cleared around 8pm on Friday. "The Estuary is already graded as "poor" and people are advised not to swim or gather shellfish. This spill may result in a slightly increased "bug" count today, as the spill moves down the Heathcote River and into the Estuary this morning," he says.
"The spill will obviously
be diluted in the large Estuary environment, before moving
out to sea, but people need to be informed about the
potential of a slightly increased "bug" count," say Mr
Stockwell.
