Hikoi update in Wellington

Police estimate 10,000 people are now part of the Hikoi march which is en route to Parliament. Detective Inspector Rod Drew, acting Wellington District Police Commander and head of Operation Hikoi, says the Hikoi left Te Papa and 10.30. Thirty minutes later, the front of the march had reached Willis Street with the tail of the march still waiting to clear Te Papa.

Four hundred people arriving by trains at the Wellington Railway Station didn’t make the start of the march in time. They’re now waiting in Lambton Quay to meet the main group.

Police are pleased with the way the march is going. The only real problem is still congestion in the inner city.

Once the tail of the march has cleared Te Papa, police will be able to reopen Cable Street.

Gordon Campbell: On the Sony cyber attack

Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.

Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
