Resource efficiency awards a first for Christchurch City Council

For the first time Christchurch City Council will be presenting awards to local businesses who are working towards environmental sustainability.

Sustainable Transport and Utilities Chair Councillor Denis O’Rourke, who will present the awards on Tuesday 11 May, says he is delighted with the calibre and innovation displayed by the award submitters.

Twelve of the 20 companies judged by long-time environmental consultant Martin Ward will receive merit awards. “I’m especially pleased to support merit awards rather than a single excellence award. This supports the reality that sustainability is a series of steps that businesses take towards greater efficiency and making a lesser impact on the planet.”

Judging criteria covered systems, people and technology, says Mr Ward.
Organisations including Christchurch subsidiaries of Australasian and international corporations, small and medium enterprises (SME’s), processing plants and trusts entered the awards.

Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.

Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
