Re-opening of New Brighton Mall road gets the green light
The Environment Court has ruled in favour of Christchurch City Council’s decision to re-open part of the road through New Brighton Mall.
The ruling was in response to an appeal against the Council’s decision from a local business operator and small group of other interested people.
“We will now be able to carry on with the overall plan for revitalising New Brighton,” the Council’s City Solutions manager, Kevin Mara said. This master plan was produced after widespread consultation with the local business community and residents.
Mr Mara expects the road re-opening will take place in 2005. More foot traffic, less graffiti and a reduction in crime are predicted to be some of the benefits of the road re-opening for the New Brighton business community.
