Whakatane Civil Defence Emergency Extended Again
Tuesday, 27 July 2004, 4:53 pm
Press Release: Whakatane Civil Defence
|
The Civil Defence Controller advises that the situation in
the district is still not sufficiently stable to lift the
existing State of Civil Defence Emergency, and therefore the
State of Civil Defence Emergency in the Whakatane District
has been extended for a further 72 hours and will be
reviewed at 4:00 pm on Friday, 30 July 2004.
The reason
for the extension are:
- Landslips are still
occurring.
- There are residents isolated who cannot be
accessed by road.
- The main access into the district is
through the epicentre of the earthquake zone.
- The
weather forecast is predicting heavy rain which may cause
further slips and road
closures.

Gordon Campbell: On the Sony cyber attack
Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.
Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
