New sculpture being unveiled on Quay Street

The Auckland City Sculpture Trust invites you to the unveiling of ‘Flight trainer for Albatross’ - the new Greer Twiss sculpture to be installed on Quay Street.

The sculpture has been specifically designed for this site and will be located on the main pedestrian entry to Princes Wharf.

Called ‘Flight Trainer for Albatross’, it will be gifted to the city by the Auckland City Sculpture Trust at the unveiling, and Greer Twiss will be present to introduce his artwork.

The sculpture comprises three large albatross being supported in a flight frame and one at ground level. It is constructed of stainless steel and stands six metres high and three metres wide.

Auckland-born artist Greer Twiss has designed the artwork to explore the relationship between land, sea and air and between man and nature. It is also a metaphor for the support needed for endangered birds like the albatross. The stainless steel structure will be robust enough for the waterfront environment and has links with the boats and activity in the area.

Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.

Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
