Rescue underway for injured fisherman
A helicopter has been launched to rescue a seriously injured crewman from a fishing vessel, about 160 nautical miles east of Enderby Island, which is south of New Zealand.
The crewman’s leg has been caught in a large machine onboard the vessel.
Due to the long distance the helicopter will be flying, the helicopter will refuel at Enderby Island before locating the vessel. A paramedic will be winched on to the vessel to assess the patient.
The Rescue Coordination Centre NZ estimates the helicopter will not reach the vessel until later tonight, about 6.30pm.
A fixed wing aircraft will be launched from Invercargill to provide top cover for the helicopter.
