Comments wanted on western corridor transportation issues

Interested organisations and members of the public are invited to comment on transportation issues from Ngauranga to north of Waikanae – the area known as the western corridor.

The comments are being sought by the Greater Wellington Regional Council and Transit New Zealand as part of their Western Corridor Transportation Study.

A discussion paper was released today as the first stage of a study. The paper explains the study’s purpose, principal issues, alternatives and how options for future investment in transport within the western corridor will be assessed.

Greater Wellington’s Transport Strategic Direction Manager Tony Brennand said they were keen to seek public opinion at an early stage to help them analyse and develop options.

“While there have been many studies of sections along this corridor and specific transportation issues in the past, this study will update all previous work and assess the options in an integrated way. It will take a long-term perspective, in accordance with the requirements of the Land Transport Management Act 2003.”

Mr Brennand said the study would consider a full range of transport options with ease of travel being a major focus. These options will include Transmission Gully, as well as alternatives, and Kapiti Western Link Road.

“A package of short, medium and long-term initiatives will be developed from the study’s findings. These will cover road, public transport, pedestrian, and cycling options, ways to encourage alternative travel patterns, and future land use options.”

Brian Hasell, Transit’s Wellington Regional Manager said the study would provide the opportunity to consider all facets of transportation in an integrated manner.

“How transportation impacts on the local and regional communities is an important part of our business and by jointly working with Greater Wellington Regional Council, local councils and members of the public we can produce transport solutions that will benefit the region as a whole,” said Mr Hasell.

The study is being undertaken by Maunsell Ltd. The closing date for comments on this initial round of consultation is 1 November 2004.

Further consultation on the study will occur at later stages of the project. The study is due to be completed by the end of next year.

Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.

Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
