Launching Newmarket's future

MEDIA RELEASE
10 December 2004

Launching Newmarket's future

Mayor Dick Hubbard will launch the framework that will address Newmarket’s future growth and development on Tuesday 14 December during a formal function at Highwic, Newmarket.

Approved by Auckland City Council in September 2004, the framework outlines how this dynamic inner city community will deal with expected growth in both its commercial and residential sectors while ensuring that the area’s character is retained and supported.

“As a transport node, Newmarket is almost unparalleled in Auckland. At a true crossroads, one of the important goals of ‘Newmarket’s future framework’ is to manage and facilitate movement into and through the area without allowing it to dominate Newmarket’s essential character,” says Mayor Dick Hubbard.

“To achieve this the framework focuses on, among other things, implementing bus lanes in sections of Khyber Pass Road and Broadway to improve the reliability of bus services when these areas are congested during peak hours.”

The document also outlines the range of strategies that will support the economic vitality of Newmarket, protect the character of the natural and built environment while encouraging quality urban design in new developments. Furthermore, it demonstrates how both community level and central government partnerships are key to ensuring Newmarket’s future.

“Auckland City and the community’s vision of Newmarket is of a bustling, dynamic area where people live, work, shop, do business and relax,” says Mr Hubbard.

“We have been working closely with the all aspects of the Newmarket community from residents to the Newmarket Business Association to ensure that our vision combines all that is special and unique into a comprehensive framework for the future.”

‘Newmarket’s future framework’ will be launched at Highwic, Gillies Avenue, Newmarket, at 6pm on Tuesday 14 December.

A summary of the full document will be available at the launch function. The content of the report will be available electronically at www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/newmarketsfuture from Tuesday night and hard copies of it will be available through the Auckland City customer contact centre from 21 January.

Gordon Campbell: On the Sony cyber attack

Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.

Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
