Waitaki Mayor Shows Support For Energy Savings Scheme

Waitaki Mayor Alan McLay will tomorrow (Thursday 12 May 2005) visit one of the three hundred Oamaru homes being helped by the Meridian Energy Saver Vans scheme.

Under the scheme, selected households are fitted with up to $400 worth of energy-saving products. These include energy-saving light bulbs, hot-water cylinder wraps and pipe lagging, as well as door draught-stoppers.

The Energy Saver teams, from EnergySmart and Oamaru company Plunket Electrical, also check and reset if necessary the temperature of hot water cylinders. Householders are also given a Meridian Energy brochure explaining what they can do to conserve energy and become more energy efficient.

"The Energy Saver Vans programme is all about providing free practical help to households that will have a real payback,² says Meridian Energy spokesman Alan Seay.

This year, a total of one thousand homes in Christchurch, Oamaru, Dannevirke and Waipukarau will benefit from the scheme.

The Waitaki District Council and local lines company helped Meridian identify which areas would benefit most from the free Energy Saver programme. All households helped by the scheme need to be Meridian Energy customers.

"Meridian Energy is committed to helping those on fixed and low incomes save power and keep warm this winter,² says Alan Seay.

Mayor McLay will visit 43a Clyde St, one of the Oamaru homes to benefit from the scheme at 10.00am, Thursday 12 May 2005. Media are welcome to attend and to take photos.
