Rescue Helicopter Flies Seriously Injured Woman

Rescue Helicopter Flies A Very Seriously Injured Woman

The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew a very seriously injured woman from Peka Peka this afternoon.

The 74 year old Stokes Valley woman is suffering from multiple injuries after her car and a Ute collided on St Hwy 1 at the intersection with Peka Peka Road, just north of Waikanae.

"It appears the woman was thrown from her car during the collision" says Dave Greenberg, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Crewman.

The accident occurred around 4:15 this afternoon and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was requested soon after the first Wellington Free Ambulance arrived on the scene. The Fire Brigade and Police set up a landing zone for the helicopter near the accident scene.

The helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance advanced paramedic onboard arrived at the scene just before 5pm.

"Our paramedic had to stabilise some of the more serious injuries before we could fly her to hospital" says Greenberg. "Once she was stable enough we loaded her into the helicopter and flew her directly to Wellington Hospital".

The woman is currently being treated and assessed in Wellington Hospital Emergency Department.
