Personal Challenge To “Get On Your Bike!”

Personal Challenge To “Get On Your Bike!”

Hastings District Councillor Deborah Turner has issued a challenge to businesses to “Go By Bike” and encourage their employees to cycle to work on Wednesday 28th February.

The campaign is part of Bike Wise Week which runs from 24th February to 4th March.

Councillor Turner’s letter will go out today to Hastings businesses, along with posters and pamphlets aimed at getting as many people as possible to participate in the event. The letter recounts Councillor Turner’s personal triumph at last year’s Go By Bike event: “I cycled to work at the Hastings District Council, and it's a 67km ride from my home! Early morning is a great time to be out pedalling. Last time I even found that in the dark the uphill bits don’t seem as steep!”

Councillor Turner also says, “If you wear your corporate colours (or some other special costume) your team could win the prize for having the greatest percentage of your workforce on bikes!”

There are three meeting points in Hastings: Karamu Road Video Ezy; Havelock North Happy Tav; and, Stortford Lodge Caltex. Cyclists are invited to meet at 7.20am for the ride into the centre of Hastings. A free breakfast snack-pack will be provided for all registered cyclists at the performance platform.

Those riding from Napier to Hastings will meet at the Napier Soundshell at 6.30am. Transit NZ is manning bridges between Napier and Hastings to ensure a safe ride for those taking part.

The event is supported by Sport Hawke’s Bay, Bike Wise, City of Napier, Hawke’s Bay District Health Board, Roadsafe HB, and Bike Hawke’s Bay.
