“Bikes? Ewe bet!” Say mayors

Hastings District Mayor Lawrence Yule has made a wager that he will attract a higher number of cyclists (per capita) for Sunday’s Mayoral Challenge than his peer in Central Hawke’s Bay, Mayor Tim Gilbertson.

The two mayors, who are both farmers, have bet one old ewe on the challenge. Mayor Lawrence Yule said it was a good opportunity to show local pride and introduce an extra element of fun to the event.

“The bet is just a bit of fun; the more serious side of the Mayoral Challenge is that cycling is an environmentally friendly, cheap, healthy way to travel. We want to encourage as many people as possible to give it a go, right across Hawke’s Bay,” said Mr Yule.

Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor Tim Gilbertson said the wager of an old ewe was fitting for two mayors with backgrounds in farming. “Although I think one of my ewes is worth two of Lawrence’s,” he said.

Hastings District has a population of 71,000 whereas Central Hawke’s Bay has a population of just 13,000. The winner of the bet will be decided by tallying how many cyclists each mayor attracts, per capita.

The Hastings District Mayoral Challenge begins at 11am on 18th February at Splash Planet car park. Central Hawke’s Bay’s begins at 11.30am also on 18th February at Russell Park in Waipukurau.
