Lower Hutt Police Continue Crackdown On Boy Racers

Last night Lower Hutt police were out in force again, targeting boy races who converge on the city.

As many as 500 boy racer cars from throughout the lower North Island can show up on a Thursday night and it generates a flood of complaints from residents, says Lower Hutt Police Area Commander Inspector Bruce Dunstan.

Last night 461 vehicles were stopped. The highest speed police detected was a vehicle traveling at 128km.

"It was pleasing to see that no one was caught drink driving," says Inspector Dunstan.

What the Police found:

• 461 vehicles stopped

• 51 infringement notices issued, comprising:

- speed: 3

- seatbelts: 2

- loss of traction: 1

- licence breaches: 29

- offences that could lead to crashes (eg bald tires): 16

• cars impounded (one for loss of traction and one for disqualified driving): 2

• licence suspensions (for having accumulated over 100 demit points in two years): 2

• 461 breath alcohol tests were conducted, but no one was caught above the limit.
