Police Seeking Public's Help Following Sunday Morning Rape In Wellington

Wellington Police are investigating a brutal sexual assault that occurred in the Tory Street/Holland Street area in the early hours of Sunday morning.

At approximately 5am on Sunday 25 March 2007 the victim was in Courtenay Place, Wellington.

As she walked past a group of Polynesians she was spoken to by a male who was part of this group.

This person then followed her onto Tory St and led her across Tory Street into the Mitre 10 car park where she was sexually assaulted near the rear of Mitre 10.

The victim tried to get away but he followed her down a small alleyway towards Holland Street. She walked to the rear of the Wesley Church and down into a garden area where she was sexually assaulted and raped.

She was wearing a multi colored dress and a black shawl.

The male is described as Polynesian, early 20's, about 6' or 180 cm tall and solid build. He had short frizzy hair that was described as having some length to it but not a full afro.

He was wearing jeans and long sleeve top which could be white.

The police have been conducting enquiries with people who live in apartments around the Holland St area and would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything that may be of assistance to them.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Perry said that the doctor who examined the victim described her injuries as some of the more brutal that she had seen.

The victim has not been admitted to hospital but is being cared for by friends and family.

The victim was able to tell Police that she overheard someone in the group he was with discussing rugby practice prior to the assaults occurring.

Detective Senior Sergeant Perry is urging any witnesses to come forward and identify the person responsible for this callous and brutal attack.

He is also asking for any members of the public who knew that this group were in Courtenay Place to contact the police.
