Police Appeal To Group Of Men Who Helped Rape Victim To Contact Them

Wellington Police are continuing to investigate a serious sexual assault that happened in Wellington city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning, 29 April 2007, between 12.10am and 12.50am.

The police are very grateful to two members of the public who came forward with information after seeing the victim on Vivian Street around this time, says Detective Sergeant Shona Low.

However, police still want to hear from the group of men who spoke with the victim on Taranaki Street near the corner of Vivian Street.

After speaking with this group, the victim walked down Taranaki Street with them and they flagged down a taxi and assisted in getting her home.

"This group of men provided help and safety to the victim and may well have seen the assailant and could hold vital information," says Detective Sergeant Low.

The person who police believe is responsible for the attack is described as:• male• dark or olive skin• 35 - 45 years old• 5'6" - 5'8" in height• slim build• curly black hair.

The offender was wearing an orange/brown jacket with black paneling, possibly a blue beanie and carrying a backpack with black straps.
